Understanding Unsupported Messages for WA API

When using Strive, you may occasionally see a message labeled as Unsupported message type.

If this happens, it means Meta successfully sent the message event to our system, but the message format is not supported by the WhatsApp Business Platform webhook, so the message content cannot be displayed normally.

What Does “Unsupported Message” Mean?

If you encounter a message that shows Unsupported message type, it means:

• The customer did send a message on WhatsApp
• Meta successfully delivered the webhook event to the platform
• However, the message format cannot be processed or displayed by the WhatsApp Business Platform

As a result, the system only receives the message as an unsupported message event, and the actual message content cannot be retrieved.

Types of Unsupported Messages

According to Meta’s WhatsApp webhook documentation, the field <UNSUPPORTED_TYPE> indicates the type of message that is unsupported.

Possible values include:

  • errors

  • gif

  • group_invite

  • hsm

  • image

  • interactive

  • keep_in_chat

  • link_preview

  • list

  • location

  • media_placeholder

  • order

These values represent the type of message that WhatsApp attempted to send through the webhook but is not supported for display or processing.

Conclusion

If you encounter an Unsupported message type, it indicates that the message was successfully delivered by Meta, but the format is not supported by the WhatsApp Business Platform webhook.

As a result, the message content cannot be displayed in the conversation. This is a known limitation of the WhatsApp Business API defined by Meta, and currently there is no method to retrieve the original message once it is received as an unsupported type.
